Dan Tanson has been an independent artist since 2000, working as a performer, director and producer. His work is dedicated to creating musical theatre for young audiences, combining storytelling, physical theatre, visual arts and contemporary forms of puppetry.
Founder and artistic director of TRAFFIK THEATER Luxembourg since 2003, he collaborates with renowned institutions, festivals and venues such as Philharmonie Luxembourg, Lucerne Festival, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Konzerthaus Berlin, Pierre Boulez Saal, Wiener Konzerthaus, Berliner Philharmonie, Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, Escher Theater, Théâtre National du Luxembourg and Philharmonie Köln.
Dan Tanson has developed a distinctive artistic signature through interdisciplinary performances, often without spoken words, while occasionally integrating texts and songs depending on the project. He has collaborated with artists such as puppeteer Frank Söhnle, directors and theatre makers Michel Tanner, Luc Petit and Dario Moretti, as well as theatre creator Karel Van Ransbeek. His productions have been presented throughout Europe, as well as in Tunisia, the United States and China.
His distinctions include being named Lucerne Festival “Artiste Étoile” (2018), residencies and collaborations with Philharmonie Luxembourg and Abbaye Neumünster (2019–2024), and numerous awards for his musical theatre creations for young audiences, including the Junge Ohren Preis, the YEAH! Award and the YAMA Award. Notable productions include his opera directing debut Schattengold (commissioned work for the 200th anniversary of the Konzerthaus Berlin, 2022) and his wordless musical theatre projects Reise in eine neue Welt, as well as Somnia at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg (2019). His production D’Prinzessin op der Ierbes was nominated for the Lëtzebuerger Bünepräisser 2025 in the category “Best Young Audience Production”.
In 2018 he has been appointed ‘Artiste Etoile’ at the prestigious Lucerne Festival, Switzerland.

Dan Tanson studierte visuelle Kommunikation mit Schwerpunkt Kinderbuch und absolvierte Kurse in Dramaturgie, Physical Theatre, zeitgenössisches Figurentheater und Improvisation in Belgien, Frankreich, Deutschland, Tschechien und Luxemburg.
Seit 2000 arbeitet er als unabhängiger Künstler, tritt als Performer auf, produziert Theaterstücke und führt Regie. Sein Hauptinteresse gilt der Verbindung von Physical Theatre, modernem Figurentheater und Livemusik. Er hat in Projekten in Deutschland, Frankreich, Österreich, Italien, Luxemburg und Belgien u.a. mit Frank Söhnle, Michel Tanner, Dario Moretti und Karel Van Ransbeek zusammengearbeitet.
2003 gründet er die freie Theatergruppe TRAFFIK THEATER LUXEMBURG, die Musiktheaterstücke für ein junges Publikum produziert. Als Tourneetheater wird das Ensemble zu Gastspielen in ganz Europa eingelanden (Österreich, Deutschland, den Niederlanden, Tschechien, Schweiz, Italien, Frankreich, Belgien, Luxemburg). Seine Stücke waren des weiteren in folgenden Ländern (Nord Afrika, U.S.A., China) und in folgenden Häusern zu Gast: Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Berliner Philharmonie, Wiener Konzerthaus, Théâtre du Châtelet Paris, Kennedy Centre Washington.
Zu seinen bekannten Produktionen gehören das dreifach ausgezeichnete Perkussionsspektakel DRUMBLEBEE mit dem Pariser Quatuor Beat (Gastspiele u.a. in Washington, Paris, Berlin, Shanghai, Peking, Hong Kong).
In 2017 war Dan Tanson eingeladen beim Eröffnungs-Kinderkonzert in Hamburg’s spektakulärer neuer Elbphilharmonie Regie zu führen. REISE IN EINE NEUE WELT wird in 2018 in Europa auf Tournee gehen.
In 2022 hat Dan Tanson sein Opernregiedebut mit SCHATTENGOLD, Auftragswerk zum 200. Jubiläum des Konzerthaus Berlin.

Dan Tanson est artiste indépendant depuis 2000. Actif en tant qu’interprète, metteur en scène et producteur, il se consacre à la création de spectacles musicaux destinés au jeune public, mêlant théâtre physique, narration visuelle et formes animées contemporaines.
Il est le fondateur et directeur artistique de TRAFFIK THEATER Luxembourg, une compagnie indépendante qui produit, depuis 2003, exclusivement des œuvres scéniques pour jeunes spectateurs. Depuis 2006, il collabore étroitement avec des institutions telles que la Philharmonie Luxembourg, Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, l’Escher Theater, ainsi qu’avec de prestigieuses scènes européennes comme le Lucerne Festival, l’Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, la Pierre Boulez Saal, le Konzerthaus Berlin, le Wiener Konzerthaus ou encore la Philharmonie Köln.
Au fil des années, Dan Tanson a développé une signature artistique singulière à travers la création de spectacles musicaux interdisciplinaires, le plus souvent sans paroles, mais intégrant ponctuellement du texte et chansons selon les besoins du projet. Ses spectacles ont été présentés à travers toute l’Europe (Autriche, Allemagne, Suisse, Pays-Bas, République tchèque, Italie, France, Belgique, Luxembourg), ainsi qu’en Tunisie, aux États-Unis et en Chine (Shanghai, Pékin, Hong Kong).
En 2018, il est nommé Artiste Étoile du Lucerne Festival, l’une des plus hautes distinctions décernées par cette prestigieuse institution suisse. En 2022, il signe sa première mise en scène d’opéra de poche avec SCHATTENGOLD, une création commandée pour le bicentenaire du Konzerthaus Berlin. En 2025, il crée son troisième projet musical à l’Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.

„Somnia“, eine Produktion der Elbphilharmonie mit dem Ensemble Resonanz und zwei Zirkusartisten, bringt traumähnliche Szenen auf die Bühne, in denen auf poetische Weise Musik in Bewegung übersetzt wird. Auch die Musikerinnen und Musiker sind dabei ins Bühnengeschehen eingebunden, spielen von verschiedenen Orten aus und bewegen sich während des Musizierens oder an den Übergängen. Sie treten in Interaktion mit den Akrobaten und wirken als Darsteller/-innen ebenso überzeugend wie mit ihrem klangintensiven und perfekten Spiel. Nicht nur bei der musikalischen Umsetzung, sondern auch im gesamten szenischen Ablauf für jeden Moment zu wissen, was zu tun ist, erhöht die Präsenz auf der Bühne unglaublich und unterstützt damit wiederum das Hören. In dieser Inszenierung geht der Traum, dass Musiker ihre Musik verkörpern, in Erfüllung. Sensibel und kunstvoll, immer im Sinne der Musik tritt dabei die Artistik an ihre Seite. Und wie im Traum erscheint logisch, was wir sehen und hören, und nichts naheliegender als eine Jonglage zur Bach-Invention.
